Solve the mystery of the body in the bag

On Saturday 22 January 2000, two men found a small holdall, abandoned on an industrial estate in the north of Sheffield. Upon opening the bag they made a gruesome discovery. A badly decomposed body.

Who was this person? Why did they die? Where had the body been stored all of this time?

On this course from The University of Sheffield, you’ll learn alongside the experts who worked to determine the identity of Mr. X. You’ll discover the forensic science techniques that were used to identify the body and understand the circumstances surrounding their death.

  • An introduction to the study of Forensic Anatomy.
  • How to analyse a skull to determine a person’s sex and ethnicity.
  • The circumstances under which a facial reconstruction would be necessary.
  • The key muscle groups of the face and the order in which they are applied to a skull in a facial reconstruction.

Forensic anatomy: identifying human remains?

An understanding of human anatomy is a vital tool for uncovering the identity of human remains. In this section, we’ll discover just how much a skeleton can reveal about a person.

What information can a skull reveal?: Sex?

The skull can hold many clues to a person's identity. In this section, we'll focus on how to determine the sex and ethnicity of a person using their skull.

What information can a skull reveal?: Ethnicity?

Now we'll put our skills to the test to look at how a persons ethnicity can be revealed from their skull.

What information can teeth reveal??

Teeth provide a wealth of information that can be used to identify human remains. Now we'll find out more about forensic odontology, the application of dental science in legal investigations.

Do we have enough to identify the body??

We'll summarise what we now know about Mr X and discuss whether we have enough information to positively identify the body.
