Explore the impact of tourism on the conservation of our world heritage sites
On this course, you’ll discover the legal frameworks, processes, and practices used to identify and manage world heritage sites.
You’ll build interdisciplinary knowledge on concepts that affect cultural heritage and tourism such as power, globalisation, authenticity, commodification, and representation.
As you work through case studies from Asia and around the world, you’ll critically examine contemporary issues in cultural and heritage site tourism management.
You’ll also be introduced to current debates within heritage and tourism studies that explore how and why tourists engage with heritage.
Who will you learn with?
Dr.Zhang Rouran is a lecturer in College of Tourism and Service Management, Nankai University, Tianjin, China. He is a member of ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Cultural Tourism.
Who developed the course?
The college of Tourism and Service Management occupies its own building with a hotel nearby. It has about 500 undergraduate and 185 postgraduate students with 38 academic staff and 38 support staff.
What Will I Learn?
- Investigate international conventions, charters and standards concerning the protection of World Heritage
- Identify and judge the utility of different conceptualisations of heritage
- Identify and implement knowledge of practical issues in cultural heritage management
- Assess the management of different types of cultural heritage
- Discuss the importance of the concept of cultural landscape to World Heritage projects
- Evaluate the role that tourism plays in the production and consumption of culture in heritage practices
