About Course
National STEM Learning CentreDescription
Improve the way you teach primary science by building your chemistry knowledge
To teach primary science effectively teachers must have strong subject knowledge, but many primary teachers are not science experts.
On this course, you’ll explore the key knowledge required to teach the chemistry elements of the primary science curriculum.
You’ll learn about the common misconceptions and misunderstandings children may have and learn how you can help your students identify and overcome them.
You’ll discover practical activities to do with your primary school students that will help them to learn scientific concepts in a fun and engaging way.
What topics will you cover?
- Why good subject knowledge is essential when teaching primary science.
- Developing subject knowledge for the chemistry in the primary science.
- Understanding children’s misconceptions and identifying teaching strategies to identify and overcome them.
- Curriculum topics of: understanding materials and their properties; states of matter; changes of materials.
Who developed the course?
The National STEM Learning Centre provides world-class professional development activities and resources to support the teaching of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.
What Will I Learn?
- Identify the importance of good subject knowledge when teaching primary science.
- Develop personal subject knowledge of chemistry.
- Apply subject knowledge to class teaching of pupils aged 5-11 years old.

Reflect on your learning this week
Through this course, we learn about common misunderstandings and misunderstandings that children may have, and how to help children identify and overcome these misunderstandings.
It's a great course and advocates practical activities that we should do with our children, which will help them learn scientific concepts in a fun and engaging way.
As a teacher, I always feel very worried about children's learning, we should understand the material and its characteristics; The state of matter; Changing materials to allow children to learn scientifically,
Finally I found what I was looking for in Organic Chemistry, I was struggling in Organic Chemistry and I was thinking that it so complex. However after taking this course I feel that Organic Chemistry is so easy and thank to the instructor who was able to simplify the course that any beginner in science who want really to learn its very easy to get the basics and achieve his goals, thanks again and am so happy for this awesome course and am waiting for more courses from the this Instructor.
